RAS is an annual, individually based estimation of the population associated with the labour market from the end of November. The statistics contains information about a person's primary association to the labour market, including people on leave. In contrast to the Establishment-related employment statistics (ERE), which estimates the number of jobs, RAS do not contain information about a person's secondary association to the labour market.

From 2002 and onwards, RAS has applied a new method of assessment, which amongst other things mean that voluntarily retired people receiving a special pension, and people receiving transitional allowance and who works, count as employed. More stringent requirements on minimum activity are demanded of self-employed people.
